Controlled burn underway at Sturgeon Lake

Wildfire watchers in the Grande Prairie Forest Area says what they call “hazard reduction burning” is underway at Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.
It started Saturday and is expected to continue either as long as the weather allows or until it is finished.
They add trained firefighters are burning dry grass under what they call “specific weather conditions” to keep the fires under control and keep smoke to a minimum.
The current wildfire hazard in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is low. Fire watchers say spring fires driven by wind will be a concern for the next few weeks.
