In-person attendance back for Reel Shorts Film Festival

Apr 26, 2022 | 12:18 PM

For the first time in three years, the Reel Shorts Film Festival will have in-person attendance this year.

The in-person version starts Tuesday evening and will run through Sunday at the Grande Prairie Live Theatre.

Festival director Terry Scerbak says it is wonderful to be back in person.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone again. It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since our last in-person festival.”

A virtual edition will run May 2 through 9.

Scerbak says Night 1, entitled Extreme Measures and presented by Rewind Radio, will include documentaries and comedies.

The On the Job line-up Wednesday night will include a Q & A with an Edmonton filmmaker. Thursday is Criminal Intent. Friday will be Psycho Shorts which includes a pizza party and horror movies and comedies.

“Saturday is the Sprouts for Kids package at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, so the whole family can come out.”

“Then Saturday night is the Best of the Fest and that’s presented by Big Country and North West Crane. That will present the juried award winners and (the) Audience Choice (award).”

Sunday’s line-up is called The Frantic and is a chance for local filmmakers to shine. It includes films made for The Frantic Challenge this year along with past winners. This year, teams had nine days to make their movies not two days as in years past.

Scerbak says there will be films for kids every afternoon from Wednesday through Saturday.

“Schools are coming out with students. We actually have 900 booked, which I wasn’t expecting since teachers can also watch online but, again, they want to bring their students out for that in-person experience.”

“The Sprouts (for Kids) is the one where people can bring their kids. It has the Grade 1-3 and 4-6 films in it.”
