Alberta Health says Grande Prairie recorded 36 new cases of COVID-19 over the last week. In the County of Grande Prairie, there were 12 new cases confirmed since last Wednesday.

It is not known how many active COVID-19 cases there are in the city or county because of the move to weekly numbers.

The last week saw Alberta add 6,569 new cases following the completion of 26,156 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 25.7 per cent.

Across the province, hospitalizations fell by six in the last week to 1,120, while the number of patients with COVID-19 in the ICU increased by four to 47.

In the North Zone, 118 people are in hospital, with two in the ICU.

There were 62 COVID-19-related deaths reported across Alberta last week. This brings Alberta’s COVID-19 death toll to 4,252.

Full details and COVID-19 numbers can be found on the province’s website.

Minister of Health for Alberta Jason Copping says he’s pleased to see signs of slowing transmission of the virus in Alberta.

“Wastewater signals remain high at many sites including Calgary, but some areas seeing a decline or plateau over the past week. That includes Edmonton, Red Deer, Canmore, Banff and Grande Prairie,” he said.

“Hospitalizations have risen by about 8% last week, while the number of people in intensive care has remained about the same. Overall hospital admissions are up slightly, but are still in line with pre-covid years.”

“As we look at the current stage of cases from the BA.2 sub-variant, we’re watching what’s happening in other countries, particularly those who’ve had Omicron longer than we’ve had it here and we’re seeing it’s being to recceed.”

“We are likely near peak in transmission and then in hospital admissions.on the sixth wave of cases.” Copping noted.
