Contracts awarded for work on water system in La Glace

The County of Grande Prairie says it has awarded two contracts for a new water system in La Glace.

One for just over $895,000 for a distribution system has been awarded to Mainline Construction. Another for just under $691,000 has been awarded to Norwest Construction and Management for a water treatment plant.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre says as part of this work, a couple of water lines will be expanded.

“There are multiple systems in the Hamlet of La Glace. Some of them are owned wells or shared wells and some of them are actually on a small system.”

“So, this is really working towards having a larger system so that more people can have compliant, safe water.”

The total cost for the fully compliant water system in La Glace is $1.8 million. What the county calls a projected provincial grant of $560,000 will help pay 75 per cent of the cost of the water treatment plant.

Beaupre adds this is something the county has been looking at for a few years.

“It’s taken a lot of work by administration and some contractors to come up with a plan for how we were going to tackle this because like I said there are quite a few different systems. Some that are municipally owned, some that are privately owned.”

“We wanted to make sure that whatever the County of Grande Prairie provided in the hamlet that it actually provided for as many people as possible.”

Beaupre says they hope this may lead to some new homes and businesses for the community.

“That’s the ultimate hope is that we see some expansion in our hamlets but really it’s about providing for those that are there presently and (looking) towards the future.”

Beaupre says the tenders were just awarded Monday so she thinks the work will start as soon as possible.
