MADD’s crashed car awareness campaign returning to Grande Prairie

May 2, 2022 | 6:00 AM

A campaign meant to bring awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving is coming back to the City and County of Grande Prairie this year.

A car is placed on its roof in various locations. Mothers Against Drunk Driving last had its crushed car campaign here in 2020.

Community leader Tia Marsten says her group believes this sends a strong message.

“It has a powerful message when it comes to impaired driving. The car is flipped over on its roof and it displays graphics that they don’t drive impaired on both sides of the car.”

“Emotionally (it) really displays the consequences of impaired driving (and) what could happen if you chose to make that decision.”

Marsten says financial reasons and COVID meant it could not go ahead last year. She adds locations where it will be set up.

“We still have to request those locations, get those locations approved through city council. We would send them the locations that we are hoping for, and they would then vote on those locations, from my understanding, to approve them.”

Marsten says the crashed car will be placed strategically.

“We’re not going to place it near intersections, for example, or in places where a crashed car would be more likely seen, such as the middle of a meridian, that type of thing.”

“The car is going to be placed off the highway, in a place where it would be unlikely for you to see a (crash).”

Marsten says they hope to have the campaign going by the May long weekend.

She adds Grande Prairie was the second place in all of Canada, after Parkland County, to host this campaign in 2020.

Marsten says anyone with questions can contact the local MADD chapter through its Facebook page.
