New O’Brien Lake West school officially named after Louis Riel

Grande Prairie & District Catholic Schools says the new school coming to O’Brien Lake West will be named Louis Riel Catholic School.

The board initially approved the idea at its regular meeting last Monday and gave final approval at a special board meeting held on Saturday.

The district says in a release that the name “reflects their desire to support Indigenous communities within the region as well as their commitment to the spirit of Reconciliation.”

The district adds more than 100 name submissions came in and thanks the public for their input.

The school is expected to start offering French Immersion programming for Pre-K to Grade 8 students starting in 2022-23 academic year with Pre-K to Grade 9 coming in 2023-24. Other programs will also be offered.
