Health Minister believes Alberta is past the sixth wave peak of Covid-19

May 4, 2022 | 4:23 PM

Alberta Health says Grande Prairie recorded 76 new cases of COVID-19 over the last week, while in the County of Grande Prairie, there were 18 new cases confirmed since last Wednesday.

It is not known how many active COVID-19 cases there are in the city or county because of the move to weekly numbers.

The last week saw Alberta add 5,754 new cases following the completion of 25,568 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 23% per cent, down from 25.3% last week.

Across the province, hospitalizations rose by 47 in the last week to 1,167, while the number of patients with COVID-19 in the ICU dropped by one to 46.

In the North Zone, 121 people are in hospital, with two in the ICU.

There were 69 COVID-19-related deaths reported across Alberta last week. This brings Alberta’s COVID-19 death toll to 4,321.

Health Minister Jason Copping believes the province is at the peak of the sixth wave.

“It looks like we are passing the peak of BA.2 circulation with less impact than we saw with BA.1 thanks to vaccine and prior exposure, but hospital admissions are still rising and they’re continuing to rise for a few more weeks even assuming virus levels continue to decline,” Copping says.

Full details and COVID-19 numbers can be found on the province’s website.
