Construction season is picking back up in Grande Prairie.

May marks the first wave of infrastructure improvements being done and this year has a long list of projects to be completed.

The city’s annual infrastructure improvements have a budget of $28.3 million dollars to upgrade/fix/build roads, sidewalks, trails, storm lines, bridges, intersections, traffic signals and much more for 2022.

The 2022 budget has allocated:

  • $11.5 million in road repair
  • $5.75 million in old highway 43 improvements
  • $3.5 million in pedestrian links
  • $3.28 million in storm line replacement and rehabilitation
  • $1.35 million in asphalt maintenance and pothole repair
  • $1 million in intersection improvements
  • $460,000 in South Bear Creek Park ball diamond upgrades
  • $450,000 in playground replacements and surface upgrades
  • $358,000 in concrete sidewalk, curb, gutter repair
  • $300,000 in bridge repair
  • $250,000 in parking lot improvements
  • $95,000 in tree replacements

Capital Planning and Construction Manager for the City, Matt Hinton says the major work will be on roadways.

“There’s a variety of work we do. We do total road reconstruction basically removing everything old and putting everything all brand new and that’s our road reconstruction program. Then we have an overlay program where we just mill off the surface and put a new one on the roadway.”

“Definitely there will be some lanes closures for sure and potentially some road closures as well depending upon how long our one there (84 Avenue from Resources Road to 100 Street) for storm work and stuff like that.”

Some projects will continue over from last year to be completed on top of the Phase 4 Downtown Rehabilitation and the North Bike Skills Park.

“In the Smith subdivision area, we are doing some work along Park Road and 92 Avenue from some work that was started last year.”

Some key projects in 2022 include:

  • South Bear Creek Park ball diamond upgrades
  • 84 Avenue between Resources Road and 100 Street road rebuilding
  • 100 Avenue between 98 Street and Landing Drive road overlay
  • 100 Street between 116 Avenue and 128 Avenue road reconstruction and realignment
  • 116 Street between 84 Avenue and 97 Avenue road reconstruction
  • Old Highway 43 Improvements on 100 Street from 116 Avenue to 128 Avenue
  • Replacement of four playgrounds in Smith, Crystal Heights, Country Club Estates, and Countryside South
  • New multi-use trail west of 108 Street between 100 Avenue and 107 Avenue
  • Sidewalk improvements at 11 sites
