3-D Children’s Charity Society Hockey/Soccer tournament returns with outdoor event

May 5, 2022 | 1:29 PM

After being shelved for a few years due to COVID, the 20th edition of the 3-D Children’s Charity Society hockey and soccer tournament is set to take place Friday at Community Knowledge Campus.

This year’s event will have a slightly different look to it, according to society chair Darren Foley.

“With COVID rearing its ugly head the last little while, we thought it would be a little more advantageous for us to go outside. So we are not going to play hockey or soccer inside. We are going to play ball hockey and soccer outside, which is exciting – the kids are excited.”

Four to five soccer pitches will be set up on the CKC football field, while four road hockey rinks will be set up on the adjacent parking lot.

The event is a significant fundraiser for the 3-D Children’s Charity Society, which supports local students with serious medical concerns.

The society has been around since 1999, and Foley does not think there is anything like it anywhere else.

“The response has always been absolutely amazing. We have walked into schools now and have presented just over $1.2 million of support. To help pay for fuel, hotels, groceries, meals, and all kinds of incidental costs they may have, and medical equipment of all kinds.”

Foley says there will be food trucks and door prizes on-site, and encourages the public to take in the action, which will take place rain or shine.

“We have supported kids, but we have also been supported by the community. And more than ever we need that (Friday). Even if it is a little drizzly, grab an umbrella and come on over. We will have some tents set up so that you can stay nice and dry.”

“We hope (the public) will support us, and get themselves a donut and watch a little bit of the action. We are playing, rain or shine!”

Around 20 schools from the three local districts are taking part in the event, which begins at 8:30 Friday morning and runs the entire day.
