Friendship Centre marking fourth annual Red Dress Day

May 5, 2022 | 2:45 PM

The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre is observing Red Dress Day with a five-kilometre run/walk partnered with Hug A Sister.

May 5 is a day to raise awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls & Two-Spirit People. The Friendship Centre wants to promote Indigenous culture on a broader scale, while also serving as a major fundraiser.

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton said in a statement on Thursday that it is a chance for reflection and awareness of the lives lost and the impacts on the community and individuals.

She said it is also a day for action as we all have a role to play in making sure everyone in the community can have a life of peace, safety, and basic human rights.

Registration starts at 5:00 pm at the Muskoseepi Amphitheatre. The first 150 GPFC members that register will be given a free event medal.

The walk/run starts at 6:00 pm, there will be a BBQ after the event beginning at 6:30 pm and Hug a Sister shirts will be on sale for $20 cash.
