Grande Prairie Mayor thinks a 0% tax increase makes this area more appealing to investors

Grande Prairie’s Mayor says for the community to be successful; businesses need to be successful.

Jackie Clayton was talking about a recent council decision to reserve funds to give a 0 per cent tax increase to non-residential property owners. residential ratepayers had earlier been given the same break.

Clayton says about $600,000 was used to, in her words, support businesses.

“When people are looking to invest in the region, we can now say that the city and the county have a 0% tax increase and I think this really makes the region as a whole more appealing.”

“It really shows that we’re open for business and we’re looking for people to invest in our region.”

Clayton says this also shows both councils value what businesses have gone through in the last couple of years.

She adds the city having a budget surplus in 2021 was not a factor in the decision.

“The surplus this year was put into some reserves, as well, there were other items that we needed to pay for.”

“We needed to allocate more money to the retroactive pay for the increase in the contract for the RCMP. As well, we needed to replenish some funds we pulled out for COVID recovery plans that we did in the community (and) the community safety initiative.”

Clayton says this was an opportunity to support the community in a time of need
