Province’s first crop report of 2022 says melt, runoff are holding up seeding progress

May 11, 2022 | 2:18 PM

The province’s first crop report of 2022 says 0.3 per cent of Peace Region crops had been seeded as of May 3. It was at 0.8 per cent this time last year with the five-year average at 0.7 per cent.

Small amounts of wheat, barley and dry peas had been planted, but no oats or canola had been seeded by that date.

The report says very little spring work has been done as there is still melting and runoff on a lot of fields.

The report says perennial crops have improved a bit with 34 per cent of hay and 38 per cent of pasture rated good.

Sub-surface soil moisture in the Peace is rated the best in the province and surface moisture is the best, with 85 per cent good to excellent.

Since the report was compiled, there has been snow and rain in many areas of the Peace.

Environment Canada says Grande Prairie had 7.1 centimetres of snow on Tuesday. There were also nearly 12 millimetres of rain on May 5 & 6.

Overall in Alberta, 12.2 per cent of seeding is done.

The South has 36.5 per cent of its crop in but farmers there are worried about drought happening again.
