WILDFIRE CHARGES

Peace River man charged in relation to wildfire North of Sexsmith

A 38-year-old Peace River man has been charged in relation to a wildfire last summer just north of Sexsmith.

According to RCMP, a fleet vehicle was stolen from the Alberta Wildfire compound in Peace River on July 10th. Five days later, it’s alleged the vehicle was used to transport stolen radiators to a lease site just north of Sexsmith, where they were stripped to remove copper parts. The vehicle was then used to transport and sell the radiators to a scrap metal yard north of Grande Prairie.

The cutting tools used to strip those radiators sparked a wildfire that grew to 1.9 hectares in size before being put out by Alberta Wildfire and Saddle Hills County volunteer fire crews.

Following an investigation, Peace River RCMP and the Alberta RCMP Forestry Crimes Unit located and arrested 38-year-old Malcolm Testawits of Peace River, and charged him with two counts of possession of stolen property, and one count of mischief over $5,000.
