GPLT unveils schedule for 60th anniversary season

January 2023 will mark the 60th anniversary of the formation of what is now known as Grande Prairie Live Theatre.

The theatre company announced their schedule for the anniversary season on Sunday.

According to incoming GPLT president Wade Fleming, it is going to be a special season.

“The 60th season, with two musicals, and we probably have with the special 60th-anniversary show, there will probably be some music involved in that. I have not seen the script yet, they are still writing it. And the season-ending show in June where we want to have a big gala. That is all in the process of being worked on by committees right now.”

“To have that anniversary show in the actual month and days that we started is going to be exciting. And the end of the season show, the big gala, is just to try to bring as many of the former volunteers and former actors and former directors and people that maybe have moved away from Grande Prairie and have not come back in a while.”

The season starts on September 15th with the launch of the romantic comedy Sexy Laundry.

The schedule is also highlighted by two musicals, including Ring of Fire in October, a tribute to Johnny Cash.

And in what Fleming called the worst kept secret in GPLT history, Shrek – The Musical will hit the stage locally in February.

“I think families are going to eat it up, especially kids, and even us older kids. I think in Shrek, Jennifer has picked a great show, and I think with her experience and her value to this community, I think she is going to put on a show that I think a lot of families are going to talk about.”

Fleming also thinks it might encourage more people in the area to come out and become a part of GPLT.

The full list of plays and musicals for the 2022-23 season is as follows:

– Sexy Laundry (September 15 to October 3)

– Ring of Fire (October 20 to November 5)

– The Play That Goes Wrong (November 24 to December 10)

– 60th Anniversary Celebration Show (January 17 to 20)

– Shrek – The Musical (February 10-25)

– Noises Off (March 16 to April 1)

– Only Drunks and Children Tell The Truth (May 25 to June 10)

– 60th Anniversary Gala Celebration – June 2023 (exact date TBA)
