May 18, 2022 | 7:07 PM

OTTAWA — Sven Spengemann has resigned as the Liberal member of Parliament for Mississauga-Lakeshore.

In a statement Wednesday, Spengemann says he is stepping down to once again serve with the United Nations.

He says will start his new job on May 28 and will have more to say later about what he will be doing.

Spengemann was first elected to the House of Commons in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019 and last September.

He has served as chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

Before he was elected as an MP Spengemann served as a senior UN official in Baghdad with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq.

“I am deeply grateful to Prime Minister Trudeau and our community for the opportunity to have served as the member of Parliament for Mississauga-Lakeshore since 2015,” Spengemann said Wednesday on Twitter.
