Indigenous health support line coming to Grande Prairie this month

May 19, 2022 | 1:02 PM

A support line to help Indigenous people navigate Alberta’s health care system is coming to northern Alberta.

Director of the Indigenous Wellness Core, Nadine Mcree talked about how the support line isn’t about getting people in to see a doctor or go to an appointment but more about support and walking along with you on the journey.

“There is a need to better support our indigenous peoples, we also know in Alberta Health it’s such a large, massive, complex system that we can make things a little easier by providing that one-stop-shop of support.”

Mcree added this support line is not a substitute for 9-1-1, it’s meant to support Indigenous people wherever they are, whatever stage they’re in of treatment, and a multiple of other things like cultural support, help with addiction or mental health, and just bridging the gap and rebuilding trust with Indigenous Peoples and AHS.

“Might not just be an acute center or a part of the pathway, but it’s the journey along and were targeting at all ages of our Indigenous populations whether that be youth, elders, on or off-reserve, settlement, urban or rural were really trying to be there for the full circle of our Indigenous Peoples.”

Mcree added as of right now this is just in the North Zone of the province, but they will never deny any calls and will try to provide the best support they can.

The first phase of this pilot support line starts in Grande Prairie on May 30th, 2022. Mcree hopes they will learn and continue to grow to help serve Indigenous peoples better.
