New ball diamonds being built at South Bear

May 20, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Some early work has started on a project that will add two more ball diamonds at South Bear.

The city’s Alissa Hodson says many user groups have talked to city hall about the need for more diamonds.

“They certainly do show quite an upswing in their user groups (membership). I think there definitely is a large user group that is looking to use these facilities, so we’re happy to provide.”

Hodson says there might be some minor trail use interruptions during construction.

“There might just be some (when) there is some construction equipment coming in and out of the site as we haul some material in. If there are disruptions to the existing trail network, there will be signs up notifying trail users and it will be just short detours around the site.”

The anticipated completion date is late July. Hodson says whether they are ready for use this summer depends on how construction goes.

“We are sodding the fields, so they will need some time to root so we don’t damage the brand-new sod that gets laid. It will be irrigated in August so the contractor will be responsible for irrigating the new sod.”

An $800,000 grant to the city from the Canada Infrastructure Program is being put towards this project.
