PWPSD accepts $8,000 donation from Iceberg Tournament

The Peace Wapiti Public School Division says it’s extremely grateful for a recent donation made by the Iceberg Tournament for mental health resources in their division.

The Iceberg Tournament started in 2017 to raise funds for children’s mental health and awareness.

‘All tournament proceeds provide direct funding for mental health assessments. This has allowed children to receive ed-psych evaluations much faster than the typical wait time … as well as help wh the cost which can be as high as $2,500 for one evaluation’ on the Iceberg Tournament website.

Heather Putio, PWPSD Assistant Superintendant said in a statement “the donation is a great boost to the resources currently available to their students.”

“Current funding allows us to contract services from Peace Collaborative Services and provide counseling in our schools, but the needs are beyond the service we have available, which creates a waitlist for assessments. We know early intervention and being able to respond to a specific diagnosis is most impactful, so the donation from the Iceberg Tournament will increase the number of assessments we can complete.” she said.

The annual tournament was put on hold for the past two years due to pandemic restrictions but returned for it’s fifth year this past April. Since it’s inception, the organization has raised over $29,000 for children’s mental health and awareness in Grande Prairie school divisions.
