Grande Prairie Nigerian Association participates in County Roadside Cleanup for the third year in a row

May 27, 2022 | 6:00 AM

For the third year in a row, the Grande Prairie Nigerian Association was involved in the county’s annual clean-up. The group composed of a wide range of professionals from doctors, engineers, and scientists all the way down to students collected 50 bags of garbage.

Solomon Okihifoh, Vice president of the Nigerian Association says why the group decided this was an important event for their association to be involved in…

“A lot of Nigerians here in Grande Prairie are professionals and were doing a lot to contribute to the community but when this opportunity came up to clean our environment, it’s one we want to take part in.”

Solomon says in the past year they used this fundraiser to help support members of the association who lost their families and loved ones throughout the pandemic, but this year they have another idea…

“Going forward we want to start organizing events, I was talking to one of our doctors that I want to organize a free medical information session, so we can teach people if your diabetic how to take care of themselves, how to deal with the common cold and all that stuff.” Solomon also touched on the group doing free financial literacy courses for the people of Grande Prairie.

Solomon says he loves giving back to the community because it feels like home. He’s lived all over the world and even in every province of Canada, but none have made him feel more welcome. He added “I’ve never seen a city with such entrepreneurial spirit”

The Nigerian Association plans on holding its next community event at Muskoseepi Park on July 2nd.
