Doug Irvine wins Grande Prairie WPCA’s Dash for Cash final at Stompede

May 30, 2022 | 12:20 PM

By just five one-hundreths of a second, Doug Irvine driving Swab Pro (2018) Ltd. Outfit with outriders Rory Gervais and Tyson Whitehead won the 2022 Grande Prairie Stompede Championship on Sunday night.

In an exciting tenth heat, three of four wagons were neck-in-neck around the racetrack.

Irvine captured the win with a penalty-free run of 1:18:33 after coming off barrel position number 2, beating Grande Prairie’s Kirk Sutherland from barrel position number 1, placing second (who is said to retire after this season.) Chad Fike finished in third place from barrel position number 3, followed by Kale Lajeunesse who placed a distant fourth in the heat from barrel number 4.

Irvine says “the horses were working and it feels good to see all your hard work in the spring come out like that.”

“I’ve never been in the dash here and it was nice to get here. I know once you get here you have a chair in the poker game and all you gotta do is play the right hand and you’ll win,” he says.

Irvine commented on beating Kirk Sutherland in the final heat saying: “I thought if I could keep him headed til the head of the lane there, that I’d get him because it gets a little heavier coming into the infield and so I was just trying to keep him pinned down there as long as I could and there’s a hard spot that I found the other night about two wide, so when I hit the homestretch and hit that, I kinda started going again and so then I knew I kinda had him there.”

The 2021 WPCA circuit was shorter than usual with the pandemic, Irvine says “I didn’t finish the end of the season last year cause I lost a buddy of mine, so I just shut it down and today (Sunday) they rest his grave so I think he’s probably watching down on me.”

The WCPA Pro Tour moves onto Irvine’s hometown in Bonnyville for the Bonnyville Chuckwagon Championship starting on Thursday, June 2 running through to Sunday, June 5, 2022.
