CIRCUS CAMP

Registrations now being accepted for summer circus camp in Grande Prairie

Registrations are now being accepted for a unique event coming to Grande Prairie this summer.

A Kids Summer Circus Camp will be held July 4-8 at Mother Teresa school, from 9 am to 4 pm each day.

Bethe Goldie is one of the organizers. She says the idea came about after one member of their group was approached by Green Fools out of Calgary about hosting such a camp in Grande Prairie.

“I was just totally on board with that because I love circus things, and the physical literacy and just the fun that can be had at a circus camp is quite amazing. And it is different!”

Goldie says it is a challenging camp that works on building physical literacy and self-esteem.

She thinks this is the first time that a circus camp has been hosted in Grande Prairie.

“There are some things that Grande Prairie Live Theatre has in the summer that are similar but not exactly like a circus camp. This one will probably be something that most people here have not seen. But we are hoping to make it something that comes back every year and possibly we will even have another camp later in the summer as well.”

Goldie says a number of circus-related skills will be taught during the camp.

“Some of the things include stilting, so you get up and walk on stilts. Juggling many different things, how to be an effective clown, puppetry, acrobatics – which is much related to gymnastics, aerial work, as well as mask work. Lots of different things. They might even have unicycle riding.”

It is open to youth aged 8 to 17, with room for up to 65 kids to take part.

Goldie says they are also looking for adult volunteers to help them with the camp.

Participants need to bring their own lunch, but Goldie says snacks will be provided.

She adds they have an arrangement with GPLT to offer some sponsorship to kids from families that can not afford the registration fee.

Those families can call GPLT or Goldie to find out more info about that.
