Grande Prairie’s mayor, four councillors, attending FCM conference

Jun 2, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie’s mayor and four members of council will represent the Swan City at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference.

It starts today and goes through Sunday in Regina.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says a resolution on rail car disparity will be one key discussion topic for our area.

“Right now, we know approximant 30 per cent of the rail cars that are requested from forestry in this region are not actually coming to our region. (We are) working with (the) Alberta Forest Products (Association) on solutions for that.”

“We’ll have a discussion with CN, have discussions (on) green energy as well as we’ll talk about housing.”

She adds Grande Prairie does a lot of things well, something it can offer to other places.

“We are successful in housing many great organizations and facilities. We aren’t necessarily presenting at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities but it’s an opportunity to sit down with like-minded mid-size municipalities to share stories.”

“You talk to somebody (from a community) of approximant size from New Brunswick, for example, and you learn something that they are doing better.”

Clayton says it will be great to get together with municipalities across the country again.

“It’s been three years since this conference took place in person. A lot has happened in municipalities since then. Although we were all facing a pandemic, we were all still operating. There were definitely some efficiencies found and some opportunities.”

“I’m sure there will be discussions around things people are doing differently now.”

Councillors Grant Berg, John Lehners, Dylan Bressey, and Mike O’Connor are also going.
