GrandeCon proceeds going to Odyssey House

Jun 2, 2022 | 9:00 AM

GrandeCon at Bonnet’s Energy Centre on July 15-17 is set to bring a new type of event to the region.

An interactive trade show and convention with a primary focus on everything comic books and film culture will be on for three days for the fan community.

Cosplayers, creators, actors, artists and vendors will all be part of the show and fundraiser, with all the proceeds going to Odyssey House.

Lou Ferringo, Dean “The Deaner” Murdoch, Veronica Taylor and many more special guests will be present at the event.

Executive Director of Odyssey House, Lisa Watson says GrandeCon is the “brainchild” of the non-profit.

“We have spent about two or three years building it (GrandeCon) and unfortunately due to COVID, we were set back a couple of years. But 2022 seems to be the year where we’re ready to launch this specific fundraising event.”

A portion of Odyssey House is funded by the provincial government. Watson says they hold other fundraisers because “typically when we want to do things over and above, like certain supplies for an individual needing our services, they all rely on our fundraising efforts.”

The non-profit provides women and their children that are victims of domestic violence, in crisis, or in need of alternative housing with safe, secure, and supportive accommodation.

“Having our supports in the community, especially with the rise in domestic violence calls to our RCMP, is crucial because we provide crisis line support as well as in-house supports but we also have outreach that helps to assist individuals,” she says.

GrandeCon’s official title sponsor is Stringam Law. Watson says “We’re really excited to have Stringam as a partner just because their underlying mission aligns pretty commonly with what Odyssey House does, so we think of ways to do our practice outside of the box and really be client-centered and we feel they align with our same mission.”
