Construction underway for new seniors supportive living facility in Spirit River

Jun 3, 2022 | 2:48 PM

On Friday, June 3, 2022 ground was broke in to start construction on a new seniors supportive living facility in Spirit River.

The new facility will replace the existing Pleasantview Lodge.

The $24.8 million dollar seniors housing project will consist of 92 units – 40 of them lodge spaces and 52 of them for designated supportive living spaces.

Minster of Seniors and Housing Josephine Pon says they saw a need for new facility in Spirit River.

“For seniors, when they retire in Spirit River, they know that they can move in and get support in the new lodge, and afterward when they get a little bit weaker and require additional support, or need to move to destinated supportive living, then they can just move from one side to the other.” she says.

“The seniors living in the existing Pleasantview Lodge, know that they are going to move into the new one soon, so it’s really good and they appreciate it, especially the seniors. Now they know that the government… they haven’t been forgotten.”

The federal and provincial government are providing $19.8 million for the project through the Canada-Alberta Bilateral Housing Agreement under the National Housing Strategy.

175 jobs are to be created with the project with the planning, design and construction of the facility. Permanent jobs will be created once the facility opens and is operational.

$833,000 has been allocated from G5 Municipalities for the seniors housing project as well as $1.3 million for furniture, fixtures and equipment.

Pon notes; “this is a very important indication of how three levels of government can work together a create a lodge that is for our seniors.”
