Day of Friendship

Crosswalk painted on 2nd annual Day of Friendship in Grande Prairie

Jun 3, 2022 | 3:00 PM

The crosswalk on 97th Avenue and 101st Street was painted with orange handprints on Friday for the 2nd Annual Day of Friendship; an event put on by the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre and Peppermint Twist Salon & Day Spa in support of Every Child Matters.

Megan Zatko, Owner and Operator of Peppermint Twist & Day Spa Salon says this is an important event to help heal and grow our community along with raising awareness for Residential School Victims.

“This is just so important to show everyone that we care, everyone should be cared about, and to stop racism it’s starting these small projects to build the community up, together.”

Zatko states she wants to do more for Day of Friendship every year, adding Bannock Burgers at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre this year. But Zatko believes hosting more events just on Day of Friendship isn’t the only answer.

“I would like to see it go through all year so we don’t forget that 150,000 graves were found within the last two years and the 2-15 memorial and not forget the injustices.”

Zatko also touched on the significance of painting the crosswalk and why it was important to her and hopesit is for the rest of the community; “This is one way we could really do it and we could have it permanent throughout the whole year so people could remember, and it’s right near the Head Start Centre so the kids can see it and see we stand together.”

Zatko says a big reason for getting involved had to do with Peppermint Twist Salon & Day Spa being completely inclusive to everybody. By not having gender-based pricing and making everything accessible for people with disabilities. Zatko says that’s why they knew they had to partner with the Friendship Centre to raise awareness for the 2nd Annual Day of Friendship.
