Next Step Yoga is hosting an event to raise awareness for mental health in Grande Prairie

Jun 7, 2022 | 10:43 AM

Next Step Yoga is hosting a Mental Health Awareness event Thursday, June 9, at the Grande Sunset Theater.

Christine Fehr, Executive Director of the Mental Illness Matters Society talks about how there is a lot more going on than just yoga…

“at 5:30 pm we have it opening, where we have massages by donation from Grande Prairie Therapeutic Massage, at 6:30 pm on the stage, we’re gonna have a quick opening, thank the sponsors, then we’re gonna have bluebird indigenous dance, there gonna be doing a cultural performance for us and then at 8’o’clock were gonna do door prizes and then a live musical performance by Mandy Rae.”

Fehr added that using Yoga as a tool for mental health is great, focusing on self-relaxation and really just being at peace with yourself but comes with challenges when it comes to varying styles and skill levels…

“What they’re going to be doing is kind of like a basic for everybody, whether you’ve been doing it for years or you’re a beginner, I think it’s gonna be pretty general so everybody can take part, I know for myself I’ve never really done it, so I’m kinda new to it.”

Fehr also touched on the charity aspect of this event, saying that all the money raised from this event will go back into the community, helping people with mental health issues that don’t have the means or funds to help themselves.

“We’re raising awareness for mental health, all the proceeds from the event themselves are being donated to the Mental Health Matters Society to bring in more programs for families and youth that can’t afford programs or they’re on waitlists”

Kids 12 and under are free, doors are expected to open at 5:30 pm,
