Province making it easier for those with disabilities to open RDSP

Jun 10, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The Government of Alberta is helping those with disabilities make sure they are getting valuable federal funding.

$500,000 will be funded annually for two years to help Albertans with disabilities save for their future through four family resource centres in the province.

The resource centres will help Albertans with the complicated Registered Disability Savings Plan application process.

Inclusion Alberta will be getting $60,000 annually for their Grande Prairie and Calgary family resource centres.

Billie Jack, Provincial Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement with Inclusion Alberta says the funding will help families “get a deeper understanding of how to access the RDSP as well as providing them support when applying for the federal Disability Tax Credit, which is one of the eligibility requirements to be able to open an RDSP.”

Jack says an RDSP is similar to an RRSP; “although there are other benefits that are contributed by the federal government for people with disabilities.”

“The eligibility criteria, meeting with specialized medical professionals for the application and making sure all the information is correct” are a few of the complicating factors to getting an RDSP that Jack touched on.

“Our role will be to bridge that gap and ensure that we increase the knowledge base within our community and provide direct support to individuals and families in Grande Prairie,” she says.

The funding from the province and the RDSP program through the federal government is important Jack says because; “unfortunately the reality for people with disabilities is that access to typical things that are available to every Canadian like; equal work and having access to really good employment isn’t always available, so many people with disabilities are dependant on financial support to live out daily life.”

Those wanting to access Inclusion Alberta services in Grande Prairie can do so online or in person at #117 Centre 2000, 11330 106 Street in Grande Prairie.
