Alberta RCMP using a hashtag to prevent crime this summer

Jun 14, 2022 | 3:30 PM

The Alberta RCMP have created the #9PMRoutineAlberta, which was made to raise awareness for crime prevention and also create a platform for Albertans to share their tips.

Jennifer Kee, RCMP Crime Reduction District Liaison Officer Supervisor, says they came up with this idea to get Albertans preventing their home property thefts.

“This time of year what we’re doing is we’re sending out a reminder to the public that it’s a good idea to develop a nighttime routine, and our nighttime routine, of course, involves crime prevention and that involves walking around your property and basically make sure everything has been put away.”

The #9PMRoutineAlberta will be posted nightly by RCMP social media accounts, reminding Albertans to do the same. The posts on Facebook and Twitter will have prompts to get Albertans out and looking around before they go to bed; “It’s 9 PM have you locked your side garage door?”

Kee said the idea to pick a time frame came from lots of experiences with her own similar nighttime routine.

“So 9 p.m. is, I know I’m starting to wind down for the night so you just get up and go for a little walk around your property while the lighting is still fairly decent outside, the weather is milder and you can just have a better view of your property at that time and it’s just a good routine to get into.”

Kee says this program will also create a platform for Albertans to share their nighttime routine and the things they do specifically for their area or certain types of crimes.

” Different communities have different crime trends and they could be sharing what’s working for them during this crime trend and another community can say well in order to prevent this crime trend why don’t we adopt this? Why don’t we take this on, let’s adopt this and be super proactive.”

Kee says this program does more than just raise awareness for crime prevention at home, but brings Alberta together with a sense of community and allows us to all help each other prevent theft.

You can share your 9 p.m. routine with #9PMRroutineAlberta on Twitter or Facebook and you can access the Alberta RCMP’s Facebook page to see their #9PMRoutineAlberta reminders here.
