Comp saying goodbye to old building on Sunday

Jun 22, 2022 | 2:22 PM

After nearly 60 years, the Grande Prairie Composite High School is moving into a new building.

Their new $78.5 million state-of-the-art facility was completed earlier this year after three years of construction.

The school is ready to take in over 1,200 Grade 9-12 students, with the capacity to hold up to 400 more.

The current GPCHS will be closing its doors, forever at the end of this academic year.

Principal Denis Vobeyda says they are “definitely in need of a new building”

“A lot of things we hear from the students are their excitement to go into a new building that doesn’t have the scaffolding holding up the roof, we have some… unique smells that waft through the hallways from time to time, so the students are excited to go to a new building for sure.”

In light of the school closing, the Grande Prairie Public School Division Education Foundation in partnership with the Comp, will be holding a farewell tour for the community on Sunday, June 26.

Vobeyda says everyone is welcome.

“Whether its a student, teacher, coach, an athlete… everybody has gone through and had some experience it seems like at the Composite High School.”

“It provides people an opportunity to come and say one last goodbye, if you will, to the old school.”

He says there will be “typical cafeteria food, and then we will have some tours of the building where you can come through, take a look around, check things out one last time.”

“We will have some silent auction items, unique memorabilia from the Composite’s storied history, that you’ll be able to take a look through and place some bids,” Vobeyda noted.

Tickets to attend the ‘Farewell Grande Prairie Composite High School’ are $10 and can be bought on EventBrite.

The new school is set to hold its grand opening in September.
