GPPL will Kick-Off the Summer Reading Program with a party

Jun 23, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The Grande Prairie Public Library will host a Kick-Off Party for their summer reading program Saturday, June 25.

This Summer Reading Game is for everyone of all ages, children to adults, and encourages reading over the summer with an app called Beanstack that tracks how much you read.

There are prizes available at the end of the summer and virtual prizes given out on the app throughout.

Teen & Adult Reading Game Coordinator Bryanna Peterson says the library has two main goals with this program. The first is to encourage kids to read more throughout the summer months. The second is to bring residents out of their homes and hang out with like-minded people…

“The Summer Reading Game is an initiative that will hopefully lead to getting people to read more and get out into the community, we have a whole bunch of programs going on we have annotation workshop, crochet workshop, trivia nights for the adults, we have a few teen hangouts for the teens, as well as a bad art night and lots of fun crafts,” Peterson said.

The Summer Reading Game does feature three age groups, Kids, Teens, and Adults.

Peterson said it was important to the library to have those two older groups and have teenagers wanting to participate in their own way via social media.

” I actually work with some teens from the Library Initiative for Teens (LIT) and they have expressed pretty avid interest in actually participating in the Summer Reading Program via Instagram.”

Peterson said the library also included the adults to give them “something new to latch onto over the summer,” adding that most adults that visit the Grande Prairie Public Library are frequent visitors, and the library wants to show them they appreciate their support. There is a Facebook group being created for adults to follow along and discuss what they read.

This year’s theme will be Jungle with the book list, events, and library decorations reflecting that over the summer.

The Kick-Off Party for the Summer Reading Program is Saturday, June 25 at the Teresa Sargent Hall in the Montrose Cultural Centre from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will feature bouncy castles, glitter tattoos, and circus fun.
