Firefighters and services a big portion of latest County of Grande Prairie council meeting

At the Monday, June 27 County of Grande Prairie Council meeting, regional fire training and fire protection were oft topics discussed and debated.

Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the MD of Greenview and the City of Grande Prairie to fund the replacement of the regional training centre for firefighters at the Dunes Fire Station. The agreement puts forwards that each municipality contributes $250,000 as well as collaborates on the establishment of an official training committee.

Council also approved a Municipal Fire Protection Agreement with the Town of Wembley. The agreement goes from 2022-2026, but is still pending a legal review. It outlines how the County Regional Fire Service and Wembley Fire Department will work together to keep the community safe, building on past agreements, and how a new position; ‘District Fire Chief’ will be employed by the county with the cost-shared between the two municipalities.

Matthew Bauer and Clinton Boychuck were welcomed as full-time firefighters with Regional Fire Services during the meeting. Kim White is also the new Fire Services Administrative Assistant, switching from her previous role in the County’s Payroll department.

The council meeting also included:

  • Alberta Transportation Update with Chanse Milligen, the Regional Director for Alberta Transportation in the Peace Region
  • Requests for support – Council approved $7,896 to Clairmont & District Agricultural Society for two furnace replacements, Councillor participation and $750 for sponsorship in Archie Memorial Golf Tournament at Dunes Gold and Winter Club ob August 19, 2022, Councillor participation $500 in sponsorship for the MD of Greenview’s Annual Greenview Charity Clay Shoot on September 8, 2022, as well as Councillor participation in the Alberta Transportation Peace Region Golf Tournament on August 25, 2022
  • Policies presented for approval – Council is undertaking a review of all of its policies this year.
