Name picked for new school in Manning

Jun 30, 2022 | 12:24 PM

The Peace River School Division has approved a name for the proposed school in Manning.

From May 24 to June 8, the public had a chance to give their suggestions. Various formats were used to gather the publics thoughts and ideas for choosing a name.

Posters were put in Town of Manning mailboxes, drop boxes were set up at both the local schools, mail-in suggestions were collected and an online form was made and shared. Electronic responses were the most popular type of submission the New School Naming Committee received.

At the PRSD Special Board Meeting on June 29, the Board of Trustees was given two names to pick from – Manning Aurora Composite School and Manning Composite School.

Manning Aurora Composite School was chosen and approved by the Board of Trustees as the new name for the future educational facility.

The name was chosen as it reflects the geographic location, “Aurora” was the original name for the Town of Manning, but was changed as another community in the country was already using it and postal service. Manning is also situated in the County of Northern Lights and home to the aurora borealis, sharing links with Indigenous culture.

Composite was chosen as it represents a combination of many things like: schools, communities, school divisions, ideology, and goals.
