Thirteen opioid-related deaths in Grande Prairie in first four months of 2022

The Alberta Substance Use Surveillance System data is showing all opioid-related deaths around the province declined in April.

There were 113 opioid-related deaths in Alberta in April, compared to 122 in March, 167 in February, and 160 in January.

Not only did the province see a decrease in these types of deaths, but so did Grande Prairie with three in April compared to five in March. There was one in February, and four in January.

Of opioid-related deaths reported in Grande Prairie in the first four months of 2022, all were associated with non-pharmaceutical opioids (including fentanyl and analogues, heroin and designer opiates.)

The Grande Prairie Supervised Consumption Site saw 2,063 visits in the first quarter of 2022 with 81 average unique visitors per month.

The consumption site had 56 adverse events attended to in the first quarter, less than there per cent of visits. These were attended to as follows:

  • EMS was called two times
  • Naloxone was administered 21 times
  • Oxygen was administered 42 times
  • Supportive care was given eleven times

EMS has responded to opioid-related events 55 times from the week of January 3 through the week of June 20, 2022, in Grande Prairie.

In 2021, there were 41 opioid-related deaths in Grande Prairie.
