No one hospitalized after a home fire in the County of Grande Prairie

The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service responded to a structure fire around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at a rural property on Range Road 34.

Bart Johnson, Deputy Fire Chief of Operations for the County Regional Fire Service, says the origin of the fire was in a basement bedroom.

Crews managed to contain the fire to this bedroom and had it fully under control 30 to 40 minutes later.

Johnson says that this situation emphasizes why people should make sure their smoke alarm is in working condition.

“In this particular case, this is an example of how important it is to have working smoke alarms on every level.”

“So while we don’t know for sure what caused this particular incident, we do know that all of the people in the house were sleeping at the time that the fire started and they were alerted to the fire by working smoke alarms.”

He says this is also another reminder to let fire crews tend to the fires, because not only are they specifically trained, but also have protective gear…

“(There were) some fire fighting actions that were taken by the homeowner, some dry chem extinguishers and a garden hose, that kind of thing, which did help control the spread of the fire to a certain degree.”

“However, those kinds of fire fighting activities can be problematic. We don’t recommend that people try to put out their own fires.”

The homeowner did suffer a minor burn on their hand while trying to control the blaze. EMS checked them out on the scene and no one was hospitalized.

Johnson says that the fire is currently under investigation but seems to be accidental,

He adds he is thankful for the public giving crews room to work and pulling over on roadways so trucks with their sirens on can pass.
