Live horse racing returns to Evergreen Park

Jul 8, 2022 | 11:43 AM

The Horses at Evergreen Park returns for another summer this weekend.

Live horse racing will take over the JDA Raceway at Gordon Badger stadium every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from July 9th to August 28th.

Evergreen Park general manager Dan Gorman says they are excited to get the season going this weekend.

“The track is looking great, and the horsemen are here from across the province. We are ready to go, and welcome everybody and their families to come out to this no admittance charged event.”

Gorman says they are making a point of trying to add more in-between race activities this year.

“Whether it is BaconFest weekend, the wiener dog races, or our Paint the Park Purple day, we just really try to add quite a bit. We actually are also having a lot more draws (this year) for the Slow Horse Sweepstakes.”

Other highlights include Derby Day on July 31st, and the Dino Races, which will be held in conjunction with Paint the Park Purple Day on August 28th.

According to Gorman, it takes a team effort to put the races on every year.

“All of our staff and team are just wonderful, but we could not do it without the horsemen and the jockeys. There are over 400 horse farms across Alberta and over six-thousand people employed in the Horse Racing Alberta industry.”

This weekend will see seven races on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Post time every Saturday and Sunday during the season is 1:15 pm.
