National unemployment rate hits another record low while Alberta rate dips below five per cent

The economic region that includes Grande Prairie and the Peace country continues to have the second-lowest unemployment rate in Alberta.

According to figures released Friday morning, the local jobless rate was 4.5 per cent in June, compared to 4.7 per cent in May.

Only the 4.1 per cent recorded in the Camrose-Drumheller economic region was lower last month.

The provincial rate also dipped below the five per cent mark in June, coming in at 4.9 per cent after sitting at 5.3 per cent in May.

Nationally, Statistics Canada reports a decline in self-employment was the leading factor in the economy losing 43-thousand jobs in June.

It was the first decline in overall employment since January.

However, the jobless rate fell from 5.1 per cent in May to another record low of 4.9 per cent.

That decline was due to fewer people looking for work.
