Council highlights from Monday’s meeting
Other highlights from Monday’s Grande Prairie city council meeting:
Council has directed administration to do a speed study on 100 Avenue downtown. A downtown business owner had come to council with concerns about the safety of the mid-block crosswalk between 99 and 100 Streets. She says she sees near misses at the crosswalk daily. She adds there have been people running not to get hit, waiting for a long time to cross the street, and a vehicle stopping to let someone cross getting hit by another vehicle that did not stop. She asked about having flashing lights, but council opted for the speed study.
A former mayor of Beaverlodge is now working for the City of Grande Prairie. Council approved hiring Leona Hanson for a role called the designated officer of City Clerk. Hanson actually started the job last week. Hanson had also been the CAO for the Village of Hythe before its dissolution into a hamlet in the County of Grande Prairie.
Council has approved having administration send in an application for a Federation of Canadian Municipalities grant. The city says this Asset Management Grant would reduce the cost of the inspection program by $50,000.
