Jul 15, 2022 | 2:29 PM

Horse racing picks up again in Grande Prairie Saturday and Sunday with the road to the 2022 Bank of America Challenge Championships at Horseshoe in Indianapolis for Canadian horses starting Sunday.

The J.D.A Raceway is the only Canadian track that hosts the BOA quarter horse races.

On Saturday, racing starts at 1:15 p.m. and features two races – the Distaff Series Leg 1 over 5 ½ furlongs for $9,000 in purse money (Race 3) and the Sprint Series Leg 1 (Race 5) over 5 ½ furlongs for a purse of $9,000.

Both Evergreen Park Racing Club horses are competing this weekend, with High Kelly Babe getting her first start for the Club in the first race on Saturday. Ynotgiveitago, a gelding that won last weekend, is entered into the final race of the weekend on Sunday.

The first 200 through the gates on Saturday will get a free hot dog and pop.

On Sunday, the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Trials begin with the final; a race that will have a $30,000 purse, slated for August at the racetrack.

The first race on Sunday is a 350-yard race, starting at 1:15 p.m. Five quarter horses are entered. Professor Gee, owned by local Jerry Stojan, is the favourite according to the Evergreen Park oddsmaker.

The second BOA John Deere Juvenile Trial is Race 2 with five horses entered including Stojan’s Nobile Rearing, the Park Pick to win that race.

The third of three quarter horses races is also Sunday. Race 3 is the GP Distance Stakes for $10,000 in prize money over 770 yards. The favorite is a Stojan horse called Get It Foose, owned by Chuck Stojan – Jerry’s father.

This week’s Slow Horse Sweepstakes is a $500 travel voucher from Marlin Travel. Race bettors that don’t win can enter their betting slip for the prize.

It is free to enter the grounds to watch the races.
