Williams suspended, Richardson fined by CFL for Touchdown Atlantic incident

Jul 20, 2022 | 1:39 PM

TORONTO — The CFL has suspended Saskatchewan Roughrider receiver Duke Williams for one game and fined Toronto defensive back Shaq Richardson for their altercation before the Touchdown Atlantic game Saturday in Halifax.

Williams ripped off Richardson’s helmet and threw it at him after the league says Richardson instigated the confrontation by crossing into Saskatchewan’s territory during pre-game warmups.

There were no penalties announced to start the contest and both players were on the field with their respective units once play began.

Richardson, who the league says also punched Williams during the game, was fined the league maximum of half a game cheque.

“Such pre-game hostilities are unacceptable and the use of a helmet as a weapon is especially dangerous,” said CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie. “Neither is to be tolerated.”

Argonaut defensive lineman Eli Mencer faces a one game suspension for derogatory language towards an official during the same game

It’s the second time a Roughrider has been suspended this season. Defensive lineman Garrett Marino was banned for four games for a low hit that injured Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and his ensuing celebration.
