Heatwave makes it way to Peace Region this week

Jul 26, 2022 | 8:01 AM

A heat warning has been issued by Environment Canada in Grande Prairie, as well as most of the Peace Region.

For more than five days, temperatures are expected to rise over 29 degrees Celsius with overnight lows near 14 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures are expected to become more moderate on the long weekend.

The weather office says the public alert spans the areas of: Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview and Peace River-Fairview-High Prairie-Manning.

Extreme heat can affect anybody and everybody, Environment Canada suggests:

  • Taking frequent breaks from the heat and spending time in cooled spaces when possible,
  • Doing outdoor activities during the cooler hours of the day,
  • Drinking plenty of fluids that are non-alcoholic and non-caffeinated to stay hydrated,
  • Not to leave people or pets in a closed vehicle for any period of time.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions pose an elevated risk of heat related illnesses, like heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion can be high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

Individuals that can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat are:

  • Infants and children,
  • Seniors,
  • Those with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions,
  • Outdoor workers,
  • Socially isolated.
