The Grande Prairie Fire Department has issued a fire advisory for the City of Grande Prairie due to heat wave temperatures and lack of rain.

Under this advisory permits for heavy fuels will not be issued, all other permits remain in effect. New permits for lighter fuels will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

However, residents are still allowed the following items during this advisory:

  • Safe wood campfires*
  • Residential fire pits
  • Portable propane fire pits
  • Gas or propane stoves and barbecues
  • Catalytic or infrared-style heaters

Residential Fire pits, burn barrels and safe wood campfires require a valid fire permit.

Any fires without proper fire permits are strictly prohibited and will require them to:

  1. Be housed within a metal, brick, or rock fire ring.
  2. Be on rock, gravel, sand, or another non-combustible surface that extends at least one meter around the fire.
  3. Have a responsible person in attendance to always keep the fire under control and extinguish it before leaving.
  4. Have enough water on site to extinguish the fire.
