Environment Canada still investigating possible tornado in Hines Creek

Aug 3, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Environment Canada investigators are still trying to determine if it was a tornado that did all the damage in Hines Creek.

Meteorologist Jesse Wagar says it remains a suspected tornado and the investigation is ongoing.

“We actually go through quite a number of things, and some take a bit longer than others, including this one. We assess the storm environment to make sure the environment is even conducive to producing tornados.”

“Of course, we can get damage from other wind-related events so it doesn’t take only a tornado or just a tornado, we can also have straight-line wind events that can produce this type of damage, so we also have to look at the damage.”

Wagar says the damage they are looking at includes several things.

“There were multiple power outages. Communications in the area were down for a little bit. It looks like there were some roofs missing on some of the local buildings.”

“A few trees were uprooted. (There was) quite a bit of flooding. We also received some reports of some ping pong ball-sized hail in the area. We’re also assessing what damage the hail likely led to as well.”

Wagar says it “looks like Hines Creek took the brunt of the damage”

“That storm did continue off to the southeast for quite a while after. At this time, it does look like Hines Creek was sort of the epicentre of the more significant damage from this storm.”

Wagar says they like to have investigations like this done in a week, but some can take longer.
