Grande Prairie man arrested after high speed police chase in Fort Saskatchewan

Aug 3, 2022 | 12:06 PM

On August 2 at 2:15 p.m., the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on 99 Avenue and 104 Street for a pickup truck with no rear license plate.

The male driver and lone occupant of the pickup truck did not stop for police and took off at a high rate of speed. Mounties followed the vehicle and observed it entering a rural property on Old Fort Trail in Sturgeon County.

The man abandoned the pickup truck and proceeded to steal a small car, he then swerved intentionally towards two officers that were on foot attempting to arrest the man.

The driver of the small car just missed the two police officers and again fled at a high rate of speed.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP, Strathcona County RCMP, and Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services worked together and saw the car lose control and come to a stop in a ditch when the driver fled on foot around Range Road 223 and Township Road 532 in Strathcona County.

The man was then located in a field and arrested.

38-year-old Michael Robert David Linton from Grande Prairie has been charged with 21 offenses which include:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited (x2)
  • Possession of break-in tools
  • Assault on Police Officer with a weapon (x2)
  • Failing to comply with an Undertaking
  • Failing to comply with a Release Order (x10)
  • Two charges under the Traffic Safety Act

Linton was remanded into police custody following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and is awaiting his first court appearance.

This matter is now before the Court and no further information will be released.
