Heatwave stood no threat for local teens walk to Grande Cache fundraiser

The heatwave the Peace region and the entire province experienced in the last week of July did not stop 15-year-old Brysen Howe from finishing his 2nd Dash to the Cache for Cancer fundraiser.

Howe walked from Grande Prairie to Grande Cache in the sweltering heat from July 24-29, raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Brysen along with his parents Tamara and Steve Howe, and others participated in the 187 km walk.

His parents say “it was very hot, I think it was the only downfall of the entire walk was the temperature.”

Tamara says it was around four full days of walking to get from point A to B, “the first day (Sunday) when we kicked off it was a really, really short day and the same thing with Friday when we arrived there, it took us probably just over an hour to get over the hill.”

At the halfway point on the last day of the walk, the Greenview Fire Rescue Services escorted the group to their destination in downtown Grande Cache where they were greeted by a cheering crowd and cake.

Brysen’s goal this year was to raise $10,000, which was reached and exceeded!

Tamara says “we are going to keep it open (fundraiser) til the end of August to collect some of the ones that are still trickling in. The support is really heart-touching.”

“There was lots of respect from truckers too, passing and they would move over, honk their horn so it made it good for Brysen walking… he knew he was getting support along the way,” Steve says.

The only “sketchy thing” the group ran into along the way was a distant encounter with a grizzly bear looking for food.

“We had two-way radios and Tamara was out with Brysen at that time and she called me, so I ripped down to them with the truck and pull in where the grizzly was and chased it away,” Steve recalled.

Donations can still be made to Brysen Howe’s 2nd Dash to the Cache for Cancer online until the end of the month.
