Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta’s student award deadline is August 15th

Thirty different student awards, worth a combined $40,000, are available for northwestern Alberta students to use to help pay for post-secondary education this fall.

The Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta created the awards to connect their donors with students that want to pursue post-secondary education in their field.

Foundation CEO Laura LaValley says this area of the province is diverse, and what works for some, may not work for most. That is why they have made the fund more inclusive, allowing students of all ages, including mature students, to apply for a wide range of awards.

“We have over 30 different awards, so there’s such a huge variety that I would say there’s not really one that is common, but there are lots of awards to take into account, community volunteerism, athletism, public service that sort of thing. So really just that wide variety and it’s not all based on academic performance.”

LaValley says the annual fund is specifically for anyone currently residing in northwestern Alberta, but it doesn’t carry the same limitations when it comes to using it at the post-secondary you choose.

“We actually have funded several schools internationally in the past and can continue to do so. It’s not that it needs to be strictly attended at an Alberta post-secondary institution but the only requirement is each applicant must be from northwestern Alberta,”

She adds that anyone who lives in Northwestern Alberta (born here or moved three months ago) will be eligible for the funding.

LaValley also said they have made changes to the application process because “they know student’s time is valuable” and have had issues in the past with students not getting all the funding they are eligible for.

“The Community Foundation has a new application portal, which is very easy for students to use. They go on and submit their application, providing a little bit of their personal information, and then the system actually generates a list of awards they’re eligible for.”

The deadline to submit an application is Monday, August 15. Click here to visit the website to apply.
