Wildfire Danger

Grande Prairie Forest Area wildfire danger now high

Aug 8, 2022 | 6:09 PM

Heat has made a comeback to the Peace Region in recent days and the wildfire rating has been upgraded to high in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

There is one active wildfire and it has been listed as under control. There have been 35 wildfires since March 1, which have burned nearly 95 hectares.

The province says when there are dry conditions, farm equipment and off-highway vehicles can spark fires in grasses and debris.

Last year in the GPFA, 67 per cent of wildfires were human-caused and 100 per cent preventable according to the government.

With the exception of campfires, fire permits are needed if you plan on burning anything in the FPA and can be obtained by contacting your local Forest Protection Office or on their new online portal.
