The Grande Prairie RCMP are warning the public about an escort service scam

Aug 9, 2022 | 11:36 AM

Grande Prairie RCMP wants to warn the public about an escort service scam making it’s way around the city.

Since the beginning of June, they have received multiple reports of an escort service fraud.

The victims reported after first communicating with someone online they started to receive threats, demanding more money or gift cards.

These threats ranged from releasing provocative images to threats of harm.

The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre has some tips to help protect yourself from scams:

  • Unless you know the person offline, there is no way to confirm who is on the other end
  • Trust your instincts, be skeptical and cautious
  • Never send money to someone you have not met
  • If you are being threatened, immediately stop all communication and DO NOT comply with the threat. In other words, never pay money and never send any additional images. The situation will NOT get better by doing either of these things.
  • Report the incident to your local police
