City councillors take first-hand look at new transit setup

Aug 15, 2022 | 6:00 AM

A couple of city councillors spent Saturday, August 6 checking the newly designed transit system in Grande Prairie for themselves.

Dylan Bressey and Michael O’Connor tried the fixed routes and on-demand services.

Bressey says he is “impressed and optimistic about where transit is going to go.”

“On-demand has worked really quickly, really smoothly for me and our fixed routes are getting me where I need to go. Our riders and drivers are starting to learn them really well.”

Bressey says there have been what he calls challenges.

“Anytime you do something new, there are going to be big hiccups and I know that there definitely have been some challenges, especially with riders figuring out what’s going on and where they need to be when.”

“I’ve really appreciated how helpful and cheerful our drivers have been in this transition and our management being on buses and seeing first-hand what’s going on.”

Bressey says a lot of riders told him it was a big change but also something they need to get used to.

“But we think this could be really good for us. So, I am hearing a lot of optimism from them, even as they are acknowledging that change is difficult.”

Bressey says the biggest issue he is seeing, is riders having trouble reading the new rider’s guide and some help in that area would be needed.
