City creates new way to fight against labour shortages

Aug 15, 2022 | 2:28 PM

The City of Grande Prairie is the second location, and largest city in Alberta to receive a Rural Renewal Stream community designation through the province’s new Alberta Advantage Immigration Program.

This is meant to support local businesses that are short-staffed.

This program allows the City to work with employers to hire immigrant workers and fast-track them to permanent residence.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says in a news release that “the program gives Grande Prairie the advantage to attract and retain an international workforce to jobs in our community while working with local partners to support newcomers as they adjust to life in Alberta’s northwest.”

However, in order to qualify, businesses will have to prove to the city they have looked both locally and nationally for workers, have a safe and discrimination-free workplace, and supports for staff when they arrive in Alberta.

In order to keep this program running effectively, the Grande Prairie Centre for Newcomers, Council for Lifelong Learning, Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce, and the City have all partnered to act as the governing body, making sure businesses follow all guidelines and assessing local employers before they post jobs on the City of Grande Prairie’s Rural Renewal Stream Job Board.

Employers interested in this program are invited to apply for endorsement and have their available vacancies posted on the job Board, which can be found t by clicking here.
