AHS issues blue-green algae warning for Moonshine Lake

Aug 16, 2022 | 5:45 PM

A blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom advisory for Moonshine Lake has been issued by Alberta Health Services.

AHS recommends avoiding all contact with blue-green algae blooms, to not feed whole fish or trimmings to pets, and limiting human consumption of fish.

Residents are also reminded to never consume or cook with untreated water and boiling the lake water won’t remove toxins produced by algae.

Areas of the lake without blue-green algae blooms are still safe for recreational use, however, AHS wants to remind everyone blossoms can move around the lake under the right weather conditions.

If you do come in contact with blue-green algae, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

Symptoms of people who have come in contact with or consumed blue-green algae consist of:

  • Rashes
  • Sore red eyes
  • Swollen lips
  • Fever and nausea

Symptoms only usually last one or two days and show up after an hour or two of contact.
